THE CHALLENGE
Back in 2008, I faced an interesting challenge. I was hired to train a small group of entrepreneurs who needed to travel to Guatemala on business. While they could have easily hired interpreters and translators to bridge the language barrier, they knew that by speaking Spanish themselves, they would unlock more opportunities and secure much better deals.
The work was cut out for me. They needed to travel in two weeks, and none of them could speak any Spanish at all. While some knew basic phrases and greetings, that was about it. My challenge was to get them to a basic yet solid conversational level with a radical focus on communication. Mistakes were okay, as long as they could get their message across confidently.
A RADICAL APPROACH
It is a fact that it takes years—not days or months—to master a foreign language. And here I was, trying to get a group of entrepreneurs ready for real-world conversations in just two weeks. I knew from the start that whatever I did needed to be radical. No traditional approach would ever achieve this. But it also needed to be realistic. I’m no miracle worker, you know. Two weeks are not enough to be solid in a new language. All you can do is focus on some key elements that cover lots of ground and yield the best returns for your investment of time and money.
To meet this challenge, I started to sketch what later became Jumpstart Your Spanish with three key principles in mind.

Instead, I focused on the tip of the iceberg. There could always be time to deal with what lies beneath the surface, but we needed to address the surface first.
Long story short, I decided to create sets of patterns that learners could memorize and combine. By doing this, and through systematic practice, they would be able to connect and express ideas perfectly, even without consciously knowing how to conjugate verbs in the present, past, or future. Additionally, since all this revolved around key vocabulary and verb patterns that would be used and reused in different scenarios over and over again, the phrases soon became second nature to them, giving them the much-needed confidence required when talking to a speaker of a different language.
For two intense weeks, they immersed themselves in what later became the Jumpstart Your Spanish program, working tirelessly through every lesson. Though the process was sometimes painful, repetitive, and boring, their desire to succeed and their motivation kept them going. They knew we had no time for fun and giggles. It was time for hard, laser-focused work. The big day was approaching fast.

When the day came and they found themselves abroad, they faced the ultimate test: real communication! Despite the immense pressure on these Spanish newbies, they all managed to get their message across and take part in basic daily conversations quite decently. True, not everything was perfect, and mistakes were made here, there, and everywhere, but what can you expect in such a short amount of time? It was a resounding success, if you ask me—or them, as they put it! They could communicate despite all that. That’s a real achievement!
Encouraged by this success, I began training similar groups of learners, continuously developing and perfecting the program.
